A Portrait of Domestic Violence: Shane and Maggie-by Sara Naomi Lekowicz

I had been photographing a couple, Shane and Maggie, since September. I had originally intended the story to focus on the difficulties felons face once being released from incarceration. My intention was to paint a portrait of the catch-22 many individuals find themselves in upon release, the metaphorical prison of a stigma they can never seem to escape. The story changed dramatically when one night, Shane and Maggie got into a fight. Shane began to physically abuse Maggie, slamming her up against walls and choking her in front of her two-year-old daughter, Memphis.”

I met Sara at a workshop in North Carolina, and I heard her speak about this story before I saw the photos. By sharing Maggie’s story we are sharing the story of women around the world.

Midland vs. DOW Swim Meet

This past week I shot swimming for the first time, truth be told I wasn’t very excited, and I wasn’t expecting to get anything good.

Was I wrong.

Unbeknownst to me or my coworkers at the paper, tonight was DOW’s “senior night”, the last time the seniors would swim with the rest of the team. It goes without saying, it was a very emotional night for everyone, I even got a little blurry eyed.

In addition to the deep emotion shown by these girls, they managed to break two pool records while at this meet. A little lighter side on this emotional event.

What I expected to be a boring, daily sports assignment turned into a possibly portfolio worthy set of images. Lesson learned, dude.
